CANstruction® Baton Rouge to Take Place Downtown

Wednesday August 16, 2017

American Institute of Architects Baton Rouge, Louisiana Art and Science Museum, and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank are “getting the band together” to raise awareness of the issue of hunger in a unique way as we kick-off Hunger Action Month with “Rock-Can-Roll” CANstruction®. This event comes with large support from Shaw Center for the Arts, Manship Theatre, and many local businesses and community members.  CANstruction® invites participants from the design, building, and business communities to take part in a unique design/build competition where everyone wins!

This competition challenges teams to build structures entirely of canned food and other non-perishable food items, showcasing the ingenuity of south Louisiana’s design, construction, and business professionals. At the end of the competition and public viewing, all food will be donated to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Teams will build/compete from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. (or will end as soon as teams are done) Wednesday, August 23rd. The installations will open to the public Friday, August 25th so everyone can visit and for the People’s Choice Award!

Participate in the Musical Mingling to see structures and vote for your favorite on Thursday, August 31, 2017 in downtown Baton Rouge, beginning at 6:00 p.m. (children 12 and under in rock-star costume get in free!). Festivities will include food and drink at each location, award winners, and some great music! Tickets to the Musical Mingling are $15/person! Purchase your tickets here: https://squareup.com/store/aia-baton-rouge.

CANstruction®, a national charity committed to ending hunger, is using one can as a catalyst for change. Taking place in over 50 cities throughout North America each year, CANstruction® events are unique design/build competitions showcasing colossal sculptures built from thousands of ordinary cans of food. Highlighting the creativity and compassion of top architectural firms and their teams, these astounding structures are helping to change the world by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by collecting millions of pounds of food for local food banks.

Over the last five years, AIA Baton Rouge CANstruction® has contributed more than 67,600 pounds of food to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. This poundage provides the equivalent of approximately 56,000 meals for those in need within the Food Bank’s 11 parish service area. Don’t forget to take pictures when you visit! Share them with us on social media by using the hashtags #brfoodbank and #brfamily or by tagging us @brfoodbank.
